Straightening your kitchen cabinets and getting everything clean doesn't have to be a headache. It will only take a few hours and is not a hard task. Set aside a day when you can devote this time to getting it done right.

First of all, take care of all the normal cleaning routines, like getting the dishes into the dishwasher and putting away any clean ones. Then give the kitchen a good scrubbing. Take out all the pots and pans and clean the insides of the cabinets. Space is best used here but stacking smaller pots into larger ones. Stack their lids elsewhere, perhaps on another shelf. Frying pans can also be stacked.

Pie, cake and baking pans can go in another cabinet. These come in all different shapes so stacking them big to little will be harder. Try out different options to figure out what fits best into the others until you have best utilized the space.

Big bulky items like pizza trays, roasting pans and cookie sheets are good to put underneath the stove in the storage drawer. This is better than keeping them inside the oven. Accidents happen and someone could turn the oven on to preheat not realizing there is anything in there. Plus, it is a nuisance to have to remove them every single time you want to bake.

Determine whether you are happy with the drawers and what's in each one. If you want to swap the contents, this is when to do it. Spatulas and potholders should go in a drawer near the stove for easy access when cooking. Also think about which drawers are bigger and will hold more similar items.

You don't need functioning drapes, just something to add color to the area. They can be tied at the center with a matching tie. If your kitchen has both a sink window and another window, use the same material on both.

Then get a set of towels that matches the curtains as well as the paint or wallpaper. Get a couple of towels that will be solely for show. Hang one or two across the oven door. Most kitchen towels will come with matching potholders. Get a couple of those which will also be just for decoration. You may want to hang one with the towels or attach it to a wall nearby. Keep these unused so they will always be in good shape. Use a different set of towels and potholders that you keep away in a drawer.

As for floor mats, be careful not to put down something that is too big. The color will swallow up the sunlight. A small one in front of the stove and a matching one by the sink will suffice. Or, if you haven't the room for two, just get a medium sized one and put it in the center of the room.

Add little touches as you go. Magnets on the refrigerator are good. Try not to overdo them, or it will just look cluttered. If there is space on a wall, hang up an inexpensive calendar or a whiteboard. A fruit basket or plant is a nice touch. Set them out someplace where they will be seen but not get in your way.

The most important thing to keep nice-looking kitchens is getting rid of clutter. Counter tops should not be storage areas. Put things away and keep the counters clear. If you have several things that really don't have anywhere to go, set aside one drawer as the junk drawer. Extra bottle openers, bag clips, pencils and pens and recipes can all go in this drawer. Now you can tackle the kitchen sink. Get rid of any dishes you have that need washed and empty the sink out totally. Fill it to the rim with hot water and add a cup of bleach. Allow this solution to soak in your sinks for at least an hour, then drain and rinse them well. If you have a stainless steel sink, you can now use Brillo pads to scrub it and get in all those little cracks and crevices. Whatever you use, scrub it until it shines, and then use a dishcloth to dry it out. This shiny sink will make you so happy!

Once you have gotten your kitchen clean, you need to try to keep up with it on a daily basis. Take those few extra minutes after a meal to wash al the dishes and shine your sink, and empty the dishwasher first thing in the morning. Those few minutes will make a world of difference in how the room looks and how you feel about it. You will find yourself and your family much more inspired to cook and spend time there.
