How To Remodel Your Current Kitchen Cabinets

By Matthew Kerridge

A lot of people these days enjoy fixing up their home by doing the work themselves. Kitchen cabinets are easy to update, I am going to teach you how to remodel your current kitchen cabinets. This is really a simple painting project, and you will have to put some work into the project. But in the end it will be worth all the hard work you invested.

This is a project you can do yourself all you just need a little bit of experience painting. The first step is taking down all the cabinet doors and hinges. You just need a regular screwdriver to take the cabinet doors down. After you get them down, take them to a ventilated area, because you will be painting them. Always remember to number each cabinet door so you will know where the door is supposed to go when you put it back up again.

You can lay plastic sheeting on the ground, and place the cabinet doors next to each other. You will need to use an electric sander, which makes the job go so much faster, or you can use sand paper and elbow grease to sand the doors down. You will only need to sand enough to give the primer something to grip to. You must not skip this step otherwise your paint will start to peel off the doors.

The next thing you need to do is purchase the primer and the paint color of your choice. The surfaces have been sanded and it is now ready for a coat of white primer. You only need to use one coat of white primer before the paint color is painted on the surface. The primer is used to block the dark stains that are on the surfaces of what you are going to paint. Priming the cabinets also makes for a fantastic looking finished product.

Just before you prime your cabinet doors and frames, take a old tee shirt or rag and just wipe down all the surfaces that you are going to paint. This way there is not dirt or dust and you have a clean surface to paint. You may use a mini roller or a paint brush for the cabinet doors. Choose the painting tool that you feel most comfortable using. One tip I have is that if you use the roller, it leaves no brush strokes, and it just looks a lot better than brush painted cabinets.

At this point you want to go ahead and prime all the cabinet doors and frames, and let it dry completely. When the primer has dried go ahead and put your first coat of color on your cabinets. Let that dry and then paint a second coat. Generally speaking two coats of paint on the cabinets makes the color come through and you will have what look like new cabinet doors and frames

Now that you have updated your cabinets by painting them, you need to put on the finishing touches. The finishing touches are the hinges and knobs, otherwise known as the jewelry of the cabinets. Spray painting these things is a great idea. Choose a nice metal color such as gold or bronze. This take two coats of paint just like the cabinets did. If you decide to buy new hinges and knobs, I would do some shopping around, as they can be expensive.

Now I have given you step by step instructions on how to reface your cabinet doors for very little money. If you are doing the project yourself, you are saving the money on labor to have someone else do the work for you. When you are finished painting your cabinets, your entire kitchen will look brand new. It is amazing what a little bit of paint can do for a kitchen. - 32406
