Under Cabinet Lighting And Your Kitchen

By Tom Sanderrs

Many who have watched home improvement shows on TV have wondered about how designers manage to create lighting effects in rooms. The answer is simple and it all has to do with right installation of under cabinet lighting. Although the name makes people believe it is only suitable for being used under a cabinet, that is not true and these lights are capable of much more. Than can actually be used anywhere that needs more illumination or where you just want to add a creative designing touch.

In some cases you will even be able to choose between different colors, but this option will depend upon which kind of light you have chosen. Especially with LED lighting you will have choices for various colors and these can be used to highlight certain features of your home which are unique or to just create a certain atmosphere. The only thing you have to watch out for is that you don?t mix brands of lighting when working on a single room or project. This is because every brand has its own unique shade of color, even if you are dealing only with something simple like black or white. Having different shades may ruin the desired effect.

In your kitchen you can use the lights in more places than under the counter. The lights can be used to accent your back splash to make it really stand out. Using recessed or puck lighting and lights with swivels will make the look you want. You will want to face the lights inward and you will have an instantaneous improvement.

If your kitchen looks or feels too small and there is some space between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling, then just add some lighting strips to the cabinet top. This will make the ceiling appear to be higher and that results in the room coming across as larger than it really is. For those selling a home, this is a great trick that can even be what sells the home.

How many times have you had problems finding something in your cabinet because it was so dark in the back? While deep cabinets offer you more storage space, it can be difficult to see everything inside the cabinet. Add a little light to the back of the cabinet to solve this problem.

Are you tired of only being able to see the contents of your curio or china cabinet during the day? While you can purchase lighted cabinets, these often cost a lot more than unlighted ones. A better option is to attach LED strips to the undersides of shelves. Strips can also be installed at the back or sides of the cabinet to provide additional lighting.

If you have an entertainment center where you like to display photos and knick knacks on the shelves and perhaps on top of the entertainment center then you can make them all stand out with the placement of a few swivel lights or strip lighting. The strip one can be placed on top or if you want a more dramatic look place swivel lights on the top and then you can slide them forward. You can then angle back to display your objects.

As you can see, under cabinet lighting can be used all over the house in a variety of ways. Look around your home to see what areas could benefit from additional lighting. Then visit a store that sells lights to see which would work best for the area. You don't have to be a designer to add a designer touch to your home. - 32406
