24" Bar Stools

By Matt Adams

If you think about bar stools for a minute, you typically get a certain image in your head of ba patrons bellied up to the bar, beer stein or cocktail in hand, chatting with the bartender and the local "Norm" at the end of the bar. Bar stools were always designed so you could sit comfortably with your elbows on the bar, which was also standard bar height, equally good for resting your elbows on when standing. Well, bar stools have evolved.

Most typically when we think of a bar stool, we picture the old oak round back swivel stool that can take years of abuse and still look great. The standard stool height of 30 inches was specially designed to match the standard bar height of 42". This bar height was ideal for leaning against and resting your elbows on while standing, so the most comfortable height for a bar stool puts your elbows at the same height when you are sitting in your bar stool as well. It also makes a great height for talking to others around or across from you at the bar.

In the swinging 60s, a few people were incorporating bars into their homes and accordingly bar stools began to make a small appear in residential settings. The old wooden stools from pubs were popular but at this point we were seeing the emergence of metal and chrome bar stools. The wooden bar stools were found in basement or recreation room bars while the chrome and padded bar stool were most often found in living rooms and poolside.

Even with this home decor revolution and the introduction of barstools to the home, you would still typically find the more common 30" bar stool. The higher bar stools outnumbered short diner counter height stools just by the sheer number of establishments with the taller barstools. As barstools were introduced to the residential settings, the shorter 24" version became an increasingly popular stool height option, especially with the design changes that came in the 1980s. 24" bar stools were now all the rage.

The short bar stool size is a good choice for family homes, where children will be using the bar for things like breakfast, snacks and doing projects or finishing their homework as mom makes lunch for the next day. It is also a very convenient height for adults who have trouble with the higher standard 30" models.

From the introduction of barstools to the home, to the newest trends and design styles that we are seeing today, there has been a big change in where we see bar stools, and an evolution in the sizes and styles available. From the days of only sitting in a barstool when you were out in a pub, to having your own pub party in your kitchen or entertainment room, it seems that bar stools are here to stay, whether they are the standard 30" or the short 24" bar stool size. - 32406
