Family Fun In Traditional Kitchens

By Matthew Kerridge

In almost all homes, the kitchens are the center of attention. Families gather here to eat, children use it as a place to do their home or create artwork and friends sit around here to chat and have coffee.

If one room is this important for all of these aspects, doesn't it only seem logical that you should carefully consider any furniture and appliances that you place in to it. For traditional kitchens, wooden cabinets and furniture work the best as compared to things made from other alternative materials.

Lightening is also important in the kitchen. Typically, in traditional kitchens, lights are usually found above the sink and other work areas. The addition of lights on the under side of the cabinets is also a good idea so that shadows are reduced. If you read recipes frequently, a reading lamp might also be a good idea. In smaller kitchens, natural light goes a long way to make the area look more spacious as well.

A pantry is another must have for the traditional kitchen. Cabinets and closets work great for storing shelf stable foods that need to be kept at room temperature. It makes it a lot easier to find the things you need too. If you need more room you can always add extra shelves to these areas if you want. As addition to this pantry you should also have a good working crisper in the fridge and a deep freezer if possible.

Keeping your kitchen running smoothly requires not only the right utensils but also that they are placed in the proper places. In a traditional kitchen, a knife block works great and is much safer than storing knives in a drawer. Pots and pans need to be kept in cabinets with good air circulation. This is so they don't get covered in dust, but they don't begin to rust either. Utensils can be stored in containers on the counter top or hung from hooks.

The maintenance of all kitchen work surfaces is vital in any type of kitchen. Without certain precautions your whole kitchen can quickly become a health hazard. Sinks should be deep enough and have enough water pressure for cleaning any sized dishes. Take care to never chop veggies and meats in the same area and always use a cutting board that has been properly sanitized each use. If your family composts, keep those scraps away from all other food sources to prevent contamination.

The counter tops are always the first thing noticed in any kitchen. Counters that are easy to clean and very durable are an absolute necessity. Nonporous surfaces like tile, concrete, stone, laminate and resin can all limit the number of areas bacteria has to get in to and grow.

Your kitchen will always be the main are for cooking in your home. Whether you use a gas or an electric stove, it makes no difference. And whether you use a single stove unit or a counter top installed on makes no difference either. Any of these appliance can perform the tasks you will need them to do and you will be able to provide your family with some wonderful memories in the process. - 32406
