By Amy Stevens

When it comes to stocking up your new kitchen with all the tools that you might need, there are thousands of items that you could choose from on the market. One of the first rules to think about is to look to get tools that can fulfil a variety of functions and thus will allow you to save time, money and space on having others all over your kitchen.

You will need tools for prep work. Get a serrated chef's knife which can be used to chop a large variety of different sorts of food. These sorts are also preferable over getting a straight edged knife as the teeth are better for cutting.

Along with you knife or knives you will need to get a cutting board. This is so that you don't need to cut your food on the kitchen surfaces, which is both unhygienic and may well scratch up the tops of the surfaces. You will also need a basic can opener in order to be able to open cans. It may be a utensil that fulfils a single task, but its a very important one.

When you start your cooking, there are again several very basic but extremely important items that you need to get. For starters, you will always need a saucepan in order to be able to boil and steam and and do a variety of different cooking tasks. You will also need a colander so that you can drain your food and a spatula in order to stir it.

When using the oven you will obviously be needing a baking dish. This can be used for a variety of foods such as roasting meats and vegetables and baking cakes. Without this you oven is pretty much useless, so make sure that you are equipped with several of different sizes.

The final stage of the cooking process is actually serving the food up. For this you will need plates and cutlery. The staple of knives, forks and spoons come in a variety of different shapes and sizes to suit all sorts of foods and you should make sure that you have a good set of them.

You should also get a good mixing bowl in which to mix up ingredients when cooking and also to serve things like salads for a barbecue.

These are just the basic sort of utensils that you should be getting for your new kitchen. - 32406
